It will be all action in the coming weeks as Shannon Musical Society add the finishing touches to their production of Dolly Parton’s ‘9 to 5 The Musical’.
Based on the seminal 1980 hit movie with music and lyrics by Dolly Parton and written by Patricia Resnick, ‘9 to 5 The Musical’, is set in the late 1970s. An hilarious story of friendship and revenge in the Rolodex era, it is outrageous, thought provoking and even a little romantic.
Pushed to boiling point, three female co-workers concoct a plan to get even with the sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot that they call their boss. In a hilarious turn of events, Violet, played by Clare McNelis, Judy (Lauren Dunne) and Doralee (Hilary Orpen) live out their wildest fantasy, giving their boss the boot!
While Hart (Martin McNelis) remains “otherwise engaged”, the women give their workplace a dream makeover, taking control of the company that had always kept them down. The fly in the ointment is Roz Keith (Debbie Reddan), the office snitch, who also happens to be in love with Mr Hart.
Jessica Bray returns as director to Shannon Musical Society following her very successful debut directing the Irish premier of ‘Legally Blonde’ last year. Choreographer Karen Barrett has been putting the cast through their paces with energetic dance numbers, which are sure to have you bopping in your seats. Musical director Carmel Griffin, along with rehearsal pianist Rosemarie Walsh, has worked tirelessly with the chorus to ensure that the long list of musical numbers are pitch perfect for opening night on Sunday 19th February.
From the energetic opening number “Working 9-5”, audiences are guaranteed to be entertained by this high energy show! Shannon Musical Society are delighted to welcome some younger cast members this year. Aoife McNeilis, Darrell Pyke, Sadie O’Donnell and Johnny O’Loughlin will tread the boards, some for the first time; an exciting start to their acting careers.
