St Patrick’s Day ended in tragedy after a 23-year-old man lost his life when he was stabbed during a fight at a nightclub in the Shannon Knights as festivities drew to a close. The dead man was named as Jamie Higgins from the Dooradoyle area of Limerick. A post-mortem examination of the deceased was completed on Sunday evening.

The Knights was closed and remained sealed off all day Sunday and Monday as Gardaí continued their technical examination of the scene and reviewed CCTV footage.
According to a local source, the fatal incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, at around 2.00am, in a smoking area adjacent to the Evolution Nightclub.
Emergency services, including members of the Shannon Fire Service, were quick to arrive at the premises. Knights staff, Gardaí and paramedics cared for both men at the scene before they were rushed by ambulance to University Hospital Limerick where Mr Higgins was pronounced dead. The injuries sustained by the second man are not thought to be life-threatening.
A 19-year-old man detained soon after the incident was held for questioning in Shannon Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984. The man was released without charge on Tuesday. A file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions in relation to the incident.
Shannon Garda investigating the fatal incident are appealing for witnesses to come forward. They would especially like to speak to anyone who was in the Shannon Knights late on St Patrick’s Day or in the early hours of Sunday.
