Independent Clare deputy, Dr Michael Harty, has said that he will abstain from voting for Fine Gael leader Leo Varadkar as Taoiseach.
Deputy Harty met with Minister Varadkar to discuss a number of national and local issues but said the responses received were not sufficient to persuade him to vote for the Fine Gael leader as Taoiseach.
Statement by Dr. Michael Harty TD, 13th June 2017
I have discussed a number of national and Clare based issues with Minister Leo Varadkar. Among other concerns, I emphasised the need to implement wide ranging reforms proposed in the Sláintecare report on the future of health care. Other vital concerns related to the maintenance of services and the development of rural Ireland.
Whilst the Minister’s responses were supportive in a number of respects, they were not sufficient to enable me to vote for Minister Varadkar, so I will abstain in the vote for Taoiseach. Over the past year, I have voted for/against the Government on a case by case basis and will continue this practice.
