Shannon Senior Citizens Club is inviting new members to join their group which meets regularly at their Purcell Park premises. Since its formation in 1980, the club provides a very important service in the community.

Tess Barry was one of the founders and is still active on the board of trustees. Recently elected chairperson Susan Leonard is now keen to have new members come on board and has extended an invitation for men and women from all walks of life to participate in the senior citizen community.

According to Sue, the group wishes to embrace new ideas to make their activities even more enjoyable for all concerned. Great friendships are made and Sue believes these certainly help to keep both body and mind active. In particular she is appealing to anyone sitting at home, feeling lonely or isolated, to come down to the club in Purcell park and has assured them of a very warm welcome.

Members meet each Monday, Wednesday and Friday and over the year many activities are arranged with plenty of trips to keep people busy. These seniors certainly know how to enjoy themselves and have had great craic on trips to Cork and Galway in recent times. They even had a day trip to Lahinch for their Christmas party followed later by their annual dinner dance to welcome in the New Year.

An essential service provided by Shannon Senior Citizens Club is meals on wheels which benefits around 60 seniors in the community. The home delivery service is successfully coordinated by Frances Kelly and offers a good hearty hot meal. In some instances this service provides for people who are unable to cook for themselves. During the week up to twenty people avail of a 3-course meal for €5 provided in the Purcell Park premises, this is separate to the meals on wheels provision.
